Miami University Saturday Art Program
What is this program about?
Miami University has been running the Saturday Art program for the Oxford community for many decades. The teachers for the program are Miami University art education students, enrolled in ART 495 (a required practicum experience prior to student teaching). Teachers in the class pick a theme for the program that guide the prompts for each lesson plan the teacher creates themselves. There are six sessions where students meet with the teacher once week on that Saturday morning. Projects can be 2D and 3D media that include included visual vocabulary terms, historical and contemporary artist exemplars, and connections to Ohio Visual Art Standards.
I had the opportunity to teach 4th-5th grade students who were from the community of Oxford. There were ten students in my class: 8 girls and two boys. Three of them were fifth graders and seven of them were fourth graders.
Here was a break down of the schedule and what was taught at each session from my experience:
Session 1 September 23: Name design Project learning about the design principles
Session 2 September 30: Landscape Collage learning foreground, middle ground and background
Session 3 October 7: An illustration game inspired by the exquisite corpse drawing game. Students learned about line
Session 4 October 21: Make up day to finish previous lessons
Session 5 October 28: Create your own cartoon character where students used clay to make their figures 3D
Session 6 November 4: Self portrait acrylic paintings.
Final Art Show Exhibit November 18
